William J. Dometrich 8th Dan, Hanshi, and founder of the United States Chito-ryu Karate Federation, has penned a riveting chronicle of his life in Karate-do. The Endless Quest is the tale of his personal struggle to find a teacher, develop his skill and, ultimately, bring his art back to America. Throughout this selfless journey, he has unquestionably become a living history of karate in America.

Hanshi Dometrich began his training in Japan in 1953 under the direct guidance of Tsuyoshi Chitose, Founder of Chito Ryu Karate-do. He is the co-Founder of the United States Chito Ryu Karate Federation .

He began writing The Endless Quest some 20 years ago. At first he simply started collecting small notes which he jotted down as he remembered stories and events which occurred during his training in Japan under the direct guidance of Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose, founder of Chito Ryu Karate-do.  Over the years, the book emerged into what it is today — a personal history of Karate-do in America.

The publication of this Second Edition marks the first time that Dometrich Hanshi's story is being widely told.  Students of all karate styles can now get a glimpse of what it was like to train directly under one of the "old masters" of karate-do.  Chitose O-Sensei was one of the most important architects of modern karate-do during a key time in its development and without knowing why, William J. Dometrich was accepted as his first non-Japanese student.

  • The Endless Quest is a valuable and insightful addition to the growing body of martial arts literature whose focus is to reveal the true spirit of the Japanese budo — that of perseverance, dedication, and service. Students of all martial arts will enjoy its stories and be motivated by its lessons. ~Masami Tsuruoka

The Endless Quest also provides a unique insight into the early years of karate-do in North America.  Throughout his recounting of the introduction and popularization of karate-do on this continent, Dometrich Hanshi introduces us to many of the key figures who helped establish karate-do as a viable martial art in North America. Readers will learn first hand of the camaraderies, the struggles, the victories, and the defeats.

Without a doubt, The Endless Quest is a book that all students of karate-do should have in their martial arts library.  It is the culmination of 50 years of experience in the martial arts, clearly depicting the experiences of one of today's top teachers.  Readers will find Dometrich Hanshi's writing style captivating and personable, and will thoroughly enjoy the many photographs and anecdotal stories.

This groundbreaking work also includes Forwards by some of the most important names in karate-do today - Masami Tsuruoka,Tesshin Hamada, and Fumio Demura. As teachers, students, and peers of Dometrich Hanshi, these men have all traveled parallel paths and share much of his history.
